Deciding to incorporate video into your marketing strategy can feel very overwhelming. Where to start?
Starting to make videos can feel like a monumental task. What should the videos be about? What camera is best? How often to post? The decisions can feel overwhelming. But I'm here to tell you that starting small is the smartest way to begin. From there, you can snowball your efforts as you grow more comfortable. At the start, just focus on a few things at a time.
Begin with a simple goal
Rather than deciding you’re going to build a year-long video campaign all at once, just start with one video idea. You might choose to make an introduction to your business as your first video. Or maybe you want to answer a question you get often. Or discuss one particular product or service. Keep it small, and whatever you leave out can be addressed in future videos. If you happen to have several good ideas right away, start a list for later videos, and just focus on ONE for now.
Authenticity over perfection
Your first video is not going to be your best one. It would be pretty weird if it was! You will learn as you go, and your audience is fine with that. Don’t worry about having the perfect script, flawless takes, or humorous viral-ability. That will get better as you get used to it. Just try your best to make something useful to your audience, and the rest will follow. You have to start somewhere!
Know your platforms
You don’t need to post your video on all platforms. Know where your ideal audience congregates, and focus on that. LinkedIn is great for professionals and B2B, Facebook is handy for local customers, YouTube thrives on evergreen content that can be searched, and BlueSky is snappy and current. Choose 1-2 to start out with that you think best fits the type of person you want to reach.
Recruit some help
If it still feels like too much, or you just don’t have the time or patience to focus on video production regularly, there are so many options for production partners these days. You could find strategy help, production help, or both. Low-budget or high-budget. Annual contract or one-off. The options are nearly endless!
Companies like ours can help you post videos often and easily without much effort. We focus on the equipment and production aspects so you can stay tuned in to the content itself. But we also help with strategy and planning. It can be great to have someone hyping you up and bouncing around ideas when you’re not sure where to turn.
The important thing is just to start! Skill is built by doing, not just preparing, and done is better than perfect!
